Last spring, school field day was the highlight of the calendar. It was a day of unbridled movement—relay races, sack races, and bean bag tosses under a bright, relentless sun. As parents of a child with chronic eczema, we had spent the lead-up to that day doing what we’ve done for years: navigating.

We’ve become researchers in our own home, hunting for the softest organic fabrics, vetting every food trigger, and testing countless creams to create a safe experience for our daughter. We’ve learned how to build a world where she feels comfortable in her own skin, even when that skin feels like it’s betraying her.

But as the sun hit its peak that afternoon, she did something brave: she let her guard down. She wanted to be just another kid in the grass. She forgot to wear the leggings she usually uses to hide her scabs and irritations, opting for shorts so she could run faster. She chose joy over the constant vigilance of hiding.

The “inevitable” happened as the day wound down. Walking toward the parking lot, she was met with a kind of friction that no cream can soothe.

A group of boys targeted her. They didn’t just see a teammate; they saw a “target.” They threw words like “hybrid”—a cold, clinical label for her beautiful mixed Asian and Hispanic heritage. They mocked her “snake skin” and “monkey complexion,” twisting her eczema and her features into something to be ashamed of.

In the car ride home, the silence was heavy. Four friends sat together, eventually breaking the quiet with the simplest, most heartbreaking question: “Why?”

They didn’t understand. In their households and their hearts, those words didn’t exist. They couldn’t fathom why the way a person’s eyes look in the sun or the texture of their skin would be used as a weapon.

As a sustainable activewear brand, we talk a lot about “conscious choices.” We choose better fabrics to protect the planet and the bodies of the people we love. But looking back on that day last spring, I’m reminded of the limits of our protection. We can control the thread count, the non-toxic dyes, and the breathability of a garment. We can curate a safe physical experience for our daughter through the clothes she wears and the food she eats.

But we cannot sew a garment strong enough to deflect hate.

Hiding is becoming the norm for her, and it’s no longer just about her skin. It’s about her identity. This is why our mission goes beyond the rack. Sustainability isn’t just about the environment; it’s about sustaining the spirit of the next generation. It’s about advocating for a world that is as gentle, inclusive, and kind as the fabrics we put against our children’s skin.

We will keep making the gear. We will keep finding the better fabrics. But we will also keep speaking up—because every child deserves to leave the field feeling like they belong, exactly as they are.
